If I do Premed requirments, and major in something else, can I still become a Physician Assistant?
-
My main goal is to get to med school, so im going to do some sort of pre medicine requirents and major in some science. But my question refers to my plan B, say I can't get into med school, and I have all the pre medicine requirments and my bachelors in some science like Bio or physics, could I still decide that I want to to Grad school to become a PA. Also if someone could tell me what science bachelors degrees are the best, that would be really helpful!

Answer:
The PA requirements may be more extensive than the pre-med requirements. PA schools may require that you take courses in college such as anatomy, physiology, nutrition, microbiology, etc. Check the web sites of the PA programs of interest to you to find out their requirements. Many PA programs also require that applicants have extensive (up to a year) of hands-on experience in patient care, e.g. as an EMT, CNA, etc. The best science bachelor's degree for you is the one for which you would earn the highest GPA. Biomedical engineering is good because it works well as a backup plan and covers most or all of the premed requirements. You do not have to major in science; you just have to take the premed or pre-PA courses. They need not also fulfill major requirements.

It's important to understand that if you are a non-competitive applicant for medical school, you will also be a non-competitive applicant for PA school, b/c they require just about the same GPA. Only difference is you don't have to take the MCAT for PA school, some PA schools require the GRE instead, but not all. Also PA schools tend to have more extensive requirements than medical school, such as additional classes, like A&P, microbiology, biochem, classes you wouldn't need for a medical school program, and require a lot of patient contact experience like 1000+ hours!! Getting into medical school in my opinion is in fact easier than getting into PA school, most PA schools hover around 5-10% acceptance rate, which is really low. If you don't get in the first cycle, try again the next, and if you still don't get in, consider a different career like nursing. PA school is not really a good back up for med, since like i said, it's equally as difficult to get into, if not harder due to the very high applicant pool. Good luck
