Can you get the Hydra-Matic Six-Speed Automatic Transmission on the 5.3L?

Will it be better to get a used transmission or a rebuilt one ?

  • Ok here is the deal. I have a 2002 crysler sebring. The transmission went on it and the car has 158022 miles on it. I would like to know would it be worth it to get a refurbished transmission or will it be ok to get a used one ? If i get a refurbished one will my motor be able to adjust to the refurbished transmission ? if I get a used one how would i know if it will last ? I only really have money for a used one but im not sure if thats my best option. can someone please give me advice on what to do please.

  • Answer:

The refurbished, while not the best option it is the better of the two. The problem buying a used transmission is it might have the same problem as your old one. Never ever buy a used transmission. Even from a car with low miles that was totalled, chances are when the accident happend the transmission was damaged as well.

how long are you planing on keeping the car? if not long the don't spend extra money on a rebuilt one, if your going to keep it forever then get one built from your old one at TCI they have great trannies and you will love there work, if your just trying to keep it running cheap then get a junk yard tranny and hope it all goes well but you can take it back lots of times if the one you get is not good , but make sure you do it with in the time the allow for this but then you will have to remove it and then replace it again

A used one will have approximately the same mileage as yours, so it will be in similar condition. I have installed used transmissions that did not even operate, the junk yard has no clue. A rebuild from a reputable shop would be my only answer. Sebrings are not very good cars and the price of the tranny will be high, I would give up on it and cut my losses. If I could get a used tranny into it cheap enough and then sell it for a profit, I'd consider that. If you put in a used tranny you need to let the shop supply it. If you supply it and it doesn't work then you will pay labor again.

honestly (considering your financial situation) i think the rebuilt one would be better because the used 1 could give u major trouble...a rebuilt one would be a much better choice...good luck wit it tho =)

Your car is worth about $3000- $4000. You didn't say what the prices would be for getting a refurbished one and/or a used one. I'd hesitate to get the used one, since it'll be fairly old and you have no way to determine if it'll last you ten minutes or ten years. One other option- talk to a transmission shop and ask them for an estimate to rebuild the one you have. A good shop knows what they're doing and will give you one more option. Trouble is, if their estimate comes close to the value of your car, you'll have to make that decision. Say your car is worth $3000 and you need $2000 to repair it. Is that a good thing or not? You'll have to decide that for yourself. If the rest of the car is in good shape, maybe it'll be OK to spend money on it. If the motor's tired, the brakes are worn, there's body rot under the fenders and two windows don't roll down, you may be better off getting a new car. Remember, getting a used transmission (or any other one) may have some hidden costs. Put the used one in your trunk and you have to hire someone to install it. The installation will always have unexpected expenses- maybe the torque converter is questionable, the muffler is rusted, so you need a new one, yadda yadda. I favor finding a good transmission shop. They've seen your transmission before. Maybe it's just a clutch pack, maybe just the torque converter. We don't know and you might not either, with that vague phrase, " The transmission went on it ..." Hope you make a decision that's right for you. ... Good luck!!
