How to become a book editor?

Should i become a book editor?

  • Answer:

As always, the answer is up to you, but there are a few things you want to consider. You're right when you are hesitant to jump into books, but you only have to look so far as The Hunger Games and harry Potter to be reaffirmed that books are still as popular as ever. You also have to consider what a book editor does. Essentially, they decide if a book is good enough to be published. This takes very good knowledge of both literature and the current interests of modern day culture. Instead of asking "Do I like the book?" you have to ask "Would enough people like this book for my company to make a profit?" Sometimes the answers are the same, but often they're not. I'd recommend getting involved in a book club, or campus collecton if that is available to you. That way you will have the opportunity to read varying style of books and garner a wide knowledge base of what people do and don't like. Also, just read. Read lots and lots of different books. Memoir, Fantasy, Biography, Historical fiction, Documentary, Poety etc. Read the best, and read some that aren't the best. That way you will have something to compare the books that you edit when you decide if it's good enough to be published.

well it depends. a book editor is not the millionaire job making career, so i wouldn't put ALLL of your time into it, but definatly look into it as a side job. if you've dreamed about it though, and you don't want to do ANYTHING else, than go for it. BUT, if you want to have a some money in your pocket, find a similar career, pays alot, good working conditions and you will gain almost the same experience as becoming a full fledged book editor. It could be a job at home kinda thing.its all about YOU. What do you want? Life is about sacrifices. To succeed you need t give and take. So maybe you won't be a FULLY fleged boook editor. It beats being poor and pennyless! it is all a matter of what is best for your needs and wishes!

Maybe you should work on editing yourself! ^-^" If book editing is something that you think you could spend your entire life doing (or most of your life, anyway), then go for it. You want a job that will make you happy, and editors and publishers will always be in demand as books will always continue to be published (whether in digital or tangible form).
