What is copper?

What is the mass of one copper atom, in kg?

  • The diameter of a copper atom is approximately 2.28e-10 m. The mass of one mole of copper is 64 grams. Assume that the atoms are arranged in a simple cubic array. a. What is the mass of one copper atom, in kg? b. How many copper atoms are there in a cubical block of copper that is 2.2 cm on each side? c. What is the mass of the cubical block of copper, in kg?

  • Answer:

    a) divide the 64g by Avogadro's number 64/(6.02*10^23) = 1.06312292 × 10-22 grammes, since there are 1000 g in a kg we just divide this number by another 1000. That's 1.06312292 × 10-25 kg. This is the answer to part a. We are asked to assume the atoms are arranged in a simple cubic array (which of course we know they're not) but it does make calculations easy. So how many atoms can be fit into 2.2cm? That's 0.022 /(2.28e-10) = 9.64e+7 atoms in a row. Stupidly assuming the atoms are cubic and don't have any space in between (lol) we just cube this number and we will get the atoms in a 2.2cm cube. That is 8.95841344e+23 atoms. This is the answer to part b. The mass then of the copper block is 8.95841344e+23 atoms * 1.06312292 × 10-25 kg/atom = 0.095238947 kg This is your answer to part c. hope this helps.

a)the mas of one mole of copper is given to be 64 grams. 1 mole of any substance is equal to 6.022x10^23 atoms. so the mass of 6.022x10^23 atoms is 64 grams so the mas of 1 atom will be 64/6.022x10^23 = 10.62x10^-23 grams = 10.62x10^-26 kg or 1.0x10^-25 kg. b)the copper atoms are arranged in simple cubic form.the diameter of each copper atom is given to be 2.28e-10 m or 2.28x10-8 cm.therefore the number of copper atoms in each side = 2.2/2.28x10^-8 = 0.96x10^8 atoms =96491228 atoms and total copper atoms = 96491228^3
