How can I convince my parents to let me play video games?
-
Im in High School. Im 15 and my gpa is 90.240. I have an 84 in Geometry, 88 in Earth Science, a 90 in Intro/Engineering, 95 in French 3, 94 in Global II, and 91 in World Lit. Im also a Sophmore. I made a deal with my parents that Im only aloud to play my ps3 on breaks. This was about 2 years ago. As I grew older I started to think to myself Im tired of waiting months after months just to play my ps3 on break. So I asked them ''Mom, Dad I have good grades in school, do you mind if I play my ps3? Then they said no. I ask why? My dad says it'll ruin my grades in school. My mom on the otherhands doesnt care If I play ps3 or not. So one day I decided to sneak my ps3 out of the box and hid it where my parents cannot find it. As I've been playing it in sophmore year my grades started to build up and Im thinking to myself, maybe If I tell them I snuck out the ps3 and I've gotten good grades, they'll let me play it. Then Im like no I shouldnt tell them because I'll get in trouble. So I kept on playing my ps3 until I got caught. My dad found the box was empty and he took away my ps3. I even tell my dad my grades havent affected video games. I asked him can i atleast play the ps3 on the weekends only. Agian NO. Im like this is bullshit man, no teenager should go through something like I am. So I need your guys help to convince my parents I should be able to play video games.

Answer:
your dad has a right to be mad, considering that you directly disobeyed him. he said no for this reason, not because of your grades. also, the person who bought the ps3 in the first place gets the last word. i would just wait it out, because if you didn't buy the ps3, the only thing you have is "i get decent grades," which obviously isn't working.

Make sure when you talk to them you are cool-headed and reasonable; no yelling or tantrums. Try and explain that you are growing up, and a part of that, and maturity in general, is being able to make your own choices. Maybe a deal where for a set amount of time (say 3 or 6 months) you get control of your PS3 and when you want to play games. If your grades or social life are still fine, you get to keep control over your console. If you begin slipping, or choosing to play games instead of homework or studying, then you'll relinquish control of your system back to your dad. I agree that your dad is being a bit unfair about it. Especially if you're grades are fine. Try and stress the point that they won't be able to shelter or control you your entire life. Although admittedly you're case would be stronger had you not snuck your PS3 in the first place.

Sneaking behind your parents' backs probably wasn't the best thing to do, but it is understandable. I recommend you speak to them, at dinner or such, and tell them you're sorry you broke the rule, but explain to them that you like video games and that they clearly didn't hurt your grades when played moderatly. Tell them you understand that being obsessed by video games isnt the best for you, so you're not asking to play all the time. Then you can discuss when and how long you may be allowed to play. If your parents do not cooperate, there isn't much more you can do than act like a mature teenager and try to understand why they don't want you to play.
