Why are people so scared of dying that they have to invent tales of an afterlife? i.e heaven and hell?

• I wonder sometimes if it's because, as humans, nowadays, we seem to be so stimulated by "stuff" that we fear death more as we don't want the stimulation to end. Why can't we accept the natural state of things without having to invent fairy tales? We're born, we live, we die. Is this too brutal for people? Is it a weakness in a psyche when a person can't accept this fact of "life?"

  It is not the Born Again Christian who is afraid of death. We know we will spend eternity in Heaven with God To talk about death is so final - no one saved or unsaved likes to talk about it. It's the last thing in this life that we have to face - not knowing what it's like to die - thinking of our bodies being in a cold grave. Our soul lives forever and Christians have hope beyond the grave. I'm not afraid of death and I love God and fear Him to much to spend an etermity in the lake of fire (happens after the judgment)
