How do I become a Quality Assurance Tester in the video game industry?
-
Hello, I am a senior and I have about nine more school weeks until my graduation. When June comes around and I am graduated out of high school I want to become a Quality Assurance Tester for video game companies. This has a dream that I have had for the longest time and I have experience in playing video games, because that is what I have done all of my life. I have done some researching on the internet on how to become a Quality Assurance Tester but I had a hard time finding out on how to start. Do I have to go to college to become a QA tester? and also, Are there any places that I can email or call to help me become a QA tester? If you know could you please tell me what I need to do to become one and very last how is much is the average Salary for a QA tester. This is something that I am very interested in. :) thank you for reading. - Cheers - :)

That other poster is a flat out liar... I'm a QA tester, in the US, and testers actually get paid a decent wage. This job DOES NOT get outsourced for a very simple reason: Game companies want to keep their information confidential. They hate sending copies of games across the world for someone to test, who is not bound (or motivated) to keep that information a secret. I run a blog about breaking into the Game Industry and I've included some links for you below. You don't need to go to college, but it's a definite plus, so it's best if you plan for college, especially if you want to move up into a more advanced position. My first link is an index of articles about breaking into the game industry, you can find information on several positions in the industry from that page. The second link is about Quality Assurance, what the job entails, and some information about what you can do to prepare yourself for the job. Check out the General Info and Tips articles from the index for more advice on what you can do to improve your chances of getting hired by a video game company.

Quit asking. There are no jobs in the US for this. It's all being outsourced to China. They get paid pennies a day over there. Why would they pay min wage here for that?

For the best answers, search on this site https://shorturl.im/avApW QA jobs are abosutely not being outsourced to other countries for two very important reasons. First, if your game is in English, you need native English speaking employees to evaluate the game (for reasons of culture as well as a grasp on the language and slang). Second, companies don't want leaks, and when you ship the game across the world to underpaid workers.... there's a high chance for information, screenshots, or stolen versions of the game to be leaked. As for where to find jobs and what you need to do to become a QA tester, you can check out my blog (first link). I've written several articles on the subject, and I've linked one below (second link). Basically, you need troubleshooting skills, documentation skills, and communication skills. College definitely looks good when applying for QA positions, and some companies require it (many don't list it as a requirement, but are less likely to consider you without a degree anyways). So, what degree should you look for? Well, Computer Science is a good degree if you have an interest in programming, and QA can provide a starting point. IT, networking, security is also a decent degree, as the technical troubleshooting you do with those degrees can be helpful to a tester. Most degrees will help you land a job, even if they aren't directly related to computers (writing, management, art are all decent choices). Aside from the degree, there's a lot you can do outside of school that will help you land a job in QA. I've covered this in many different articles, so if you're interested in the game industry, read a couple that apply to your interests. Good luck.

There are several ways to make money playing the latest video games. Game companies can mail you currently being developed video games, new consoles and related products for you to test and return. Then you send them your input and they will pay you for your review. The only trick is locating these companies.
