How can I do on the job training for becoming an Intermediate EMT or Paramedic?

California does not really have an Intermediate EMT level. The one they did have is being replaced with the new levels. California has many, many schools, including community colleges and votechs that offer the Paramedic course. Why didn't you ask your EMT instructor the next step or why didn't the idiot tell you what could be in your future? Let me take a guess and say your instructor's only education was an EMT cert. There is a listing on the California EMSA website of all of the schools.

I do not know of any state that will allow you to do on the job training. We did have a school that had a company attached to it, but the company itself did not let you act out of your scope of practice. Did you look into vocational schools too? I know it happens, but in most states you as a basic hired to do a basic job but not in a currently certified intermediate or paramedic program could be sentenced as practicing medicine without a license if you were to start an IV (if it is not in the basics' protocols) or push a medication. The odds of getting caught are slim unless you and your partner are stupid about it. Some companies will pay for your paramedic or intermediate class if you work for them for so many years. Usually hospital-based companies will do that. One of them will even pay you for the hours you attend class but not clinicals, but you have to work for them as a medic for 5 years.
