Is Phlebotomy an easy career to get into?

Should Medical Technologist get a phlebotomy certification?

  • I am currently looking for a job as a Medical Technologist but pretty hard to get one since I'm a new graduate. I am interested in phlebotomy and study it more, so wanted to get a PBT (Phlebotomy) certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology. So I was wondering if I get a PBT certification, then that would strengthen my application for consideration? Since Med Techs can do phlebotomy as their job, that would be waste of my money to get it? Please give me your opinions/suggestions. Thank you for your help in advance ;)

  • Answer:

i asked my lecturer this, she said no, a phlebotomist has to make 50 successful blood draws to be certified. when u graduate i doubt u have made this much.

I believe that as a med tech you are already a phlebotomist as part of the med tech (CLS) license.. At least when I was a med tech, we did a full rotation and I drew blood for years. Contact the boards (state and ASCP) and ask, it seems to me it would be redundant.
