How to become a Nurse Practitioner?

How do I become a nurse practitioner?

  • Answer:

If you want to be a nurse why are you majoring in anything other than nursing? You're wasting time and money. Transfer into a BSN major. Otherwise, if you're already too close to graduating, find an accelerated BSN program, where if you already meet the pre-requisites you will have about 18-24 months to earn the BSN. Or, another option which I don't really recommend to most people, is you could try to find a direct-entry MSN program. They are programs for people with a BSN in other fields who want to go straight into advanced practice nursing. It's about 3-4 years depending on if you go full time or not. I personally don't believe this is a good idea because I am a firm believer you don't get enough clinical experience, and since you don't have at least a year of work experience as an RN it really puts you at a disadvantage on the learning curve.

You need to get your BSN(4 year nursing degree)and then some years of nursing experience and then complete an NP program(2-3 years).

You go to the BEST math/science school on the Island! (And great hospital might I add - yes, I'm from LI lol). Anyway, definitely talk your advisor. Or better yet, try to get an appointment with the directors. There's 2 programs for nursing at SBU - one for Accelerated BS, and one for RN in BS/MS.
