How do I fix an Xbox 360 "Open Tray" problem?

  • I took my Xbox apart cleaned it all out (dusted), and moved the laser disc reader thing back to its original position next to the washer that spins the disc. When I reassembled it and tried it out, I put in my game and it said it was reading for close to 10 minutes. I took the disc out, closed the tray and turned it off, turned it back on and put the disc in and I got the "Open Tray" problem again. Can anyone help me? (My xbox is 6 years old but i've never had a problem with it, does this mean I just need to upgrade to the Slim?)

    Since you're obviously comfortable with cracking the case open I'd open it back up and make sure all the gears are still aligned. Also, there is usually at least one rubber 'belt' or band that could have fallen of. I'd also check to see what position the laser assembly is in. On most drives (I've only taken apart pc drives and xbox 1 no 360s yet) the entire laser assembly will move up in down as the drive opens and closes, so if its getting stuck in the up or down position that could be it.
