What is the history of Easter?

What is the history/purpose of easter? Why do we use easter eggs and talk about the easter bunny?

  • Answer:

The purpose of Easter is Christian and is to celebrate Jesus Christ rising from the dead - the Resurrection. It was originally called Pascha - the Greek word for the Jewish Passover - because the bible says that is when it happened. It was celebrated on the Sunday after the start of Passover and still is most years. It is still named after Passover in most languages - Pascua in Spanish, for example.. The name "Easter" came along 500 years later and is Anglo-Saxon probably based on their name for the season it occurs. This name has lead to many mistakenly believing that the festival itself was Anglo-Saxon and so pagan. This is untrue. Easter eggs are used because people used to not eat eggs during the time before easter - during lent. Eggs were plentiful at Easter and so became a symbol of the feast. The Easter Bunny is based on a 17th century German folk tale told to children about why there were lots of eggs at Easter. Other countries have different stories. There is no evidence of any link to paganism. Hope this is short enough.

It is a pagan solution to calm opposition. It was originally a pagan celebration of the fertility goddess esther thus the eggs and rabbit's but in like 700 and something at the council of nicea emperor constatine decided to unite pagans and christians by meshing celebrations.so xmas is the pagan winter solstice.the shorteest day of the year. Christ was born in spring? Basically all religious holidays are pagan. Constatine was a pagan until his deathbed.he worshipped amun rah. But hedged his bets in case? Lol. He also decided the divinity of christ Invented the trinity doctorine and the interpretation of many verses. And which books were relevant, and which would be excluded? Lol a pagan defined christianity and god! Go figure all those killings in the name of god!!!!
