What's a good Acting Agency to use to get auditions?
-
I'm an aspiring actor, 19 years old... Looking to find a REAL talent agency to help me get auditions for commercials / movies / etc ... I am located near New York City... But I have been advised, a ton of agencies are scams and are in it for your money. Does anyone know of a well established known agency I could apply to? Thanks!

Answer:
Look on the SAG and AFTRA websites for a list of legitimate agencies http://www.sag.org/content/find-agent http://www.aftra.org/ny_agents.htm Be advised that NY is one of the toughest places in the world to get an agent. I have friends who have studied at top acting schools like Stella Adler or HB Studio and have been acting in off- and off-off-Broadway productions for 5 years and still can't get an agent because there is so much competition. They update their resume and send out to agents every 6 months or whenever they have new training or experience added. So unless you have training from a top school and a few years of experience, you are going to find it very hard to get any agent to call you back after submitting your headshot and resume.

you can find lists of legit agencies on SAG'S web site. anyone on the list that takes people your age will be ok to start. agents don't get any money unless you get work, then they get 10%. everyone is in this for the money. you will need to find an agency that is looking for new clients. they will put contact info. on their web site or in one of the acting trade magazines. you send them what they ask for. if they want to see you, they will get back to you and set up an audition. you will need to get training, experience and build up a resume before your ready to look for agents. you will need a commercial agent for commercials and a theatrical agent for film and tv. all mainstream agencies get their audition info. from the same source. the size or name of the agency is not an indication of the type of auditions they can get you on. so don't worry about who the best is yet.

You should ask at your drama school or acting class for recommendations - there are so many scams around! Any who ask you to pay then anything at all upfront is going to be a scam - and any which accept untrained an inexperienced actors are also scams. There are lists in SAG and Equity magazines, and in any good theatrical publications.

There are literally dozens of legit talent agents in NYC. But unless you have an outstanding look, charm, courage and talent, you are not going to do much as an actor. Read my book, The Tao of Acting. It is free on line.
