How important is the sweeper position in soccer?

  • The season for my high school soccer team started a few weeks ago, and my coach has been putting me in the sweeper defense position for almost every practice (we haven't had our first game yet). I had never played sweeper before this season, I always played wing back before, and occasionally stopper, but I feel like I am definitely getting better at this position, and I feel a lot more confident than I did before. But honestly, how important is the sweeper position in the game itself, especialy compared to the other defensive positions? I'm just curious about where i am and what my position means. thanks :)

    I spent my HS years at outside back. I can't tell you how important our sweeper was to me and the team. I was good, but everyone gets beat from time to time. When I did I knew the sweeper would be there to handle things until I could get back in position. Because I had confidence in him it allowed me to play with confidence and not be afraid to take chances and try for big plays.

When I did I knew the sweeper would be there to handle things until I could get back in position. Because I had confidence in him it allowed me to play with confidence and not be afraid to take chances and try for big plays.

It is probably the best defensive position to play because you dont have to mark anybody, you are the last line of defence so you have to be well disciplined and just sweep up what the defenders in front of you have missed. I have played it once and was easily the best defensive position i have ever played because my responsibility was to concentrate on the ball and not an individual striker. But now-a-days there arent any teams that play a sweeper to my knowledge but i am from Europe but there might be in other continents so it's not important anymore in the main leagues in Europe. The most famous person to ever play the sweeper role was Franz Beckenbauer and that was like back in the 60's and 70's and i dont really no many other big footballers that have played it so it has never been used as much as i tihnk it should be because it is such a good position to play and for a team to use.

It depends on how you set up your line up. If you put four defenders in the backfield to defend the goal then you could set them in a straight line or three in front and a sweeper behind. Midfielders are always very important in the game of soccer but if you set up the field with three defenders and a sweeper behind, then they are more important because they are crucial to drop and recover.
