For people who have hedgehogs as pets?
-
I've been looking at a snake for a while but I've decide to opt out of it one because me and my soon to be hubby weighed the pros and cons about it and it just wasn't the right pet for us. I've had 3 hamsters, few cats, and now I have one leopard gecko. Anyway, we've started to do research on hedgehogs because they seem like a better pet to suit us. I have the room for the cage and the necessary supplies but, How are they as a pet? Are they kind of like a bigger hamster? How affectionate/attention do they give/receive? What do you use to house them? - I've seen different examples of houses How do you like your hedgehog - and would you recommend them? Again - I'm just doing research on them but hopefully we are a good match for each other :) They are legal to own in NH :) THANK YOU! :)

Answer:
I have 3 adult pygmy hedgehogs right now :) I love them as pets; they are hilarious to watch when they're on the go and of course are very cute. They have much better 'personalities' than hamsters and are easier to handle, being slower moving and not as quick to bite (plus they dont have those *evil* chisel rodent teeth!) Bond with them enough and they'll enjoy coming to you for cuddles and tickles - one of mine will roll over on her side to be tickled, then fall alseep! They'll play with balls with you and follow you around once you form a good bond. I house each of mine in something different, each of them are perfectly happy; a 3ft lidless glass tank, an indoor rabbit/guinea pig cages and a plastic 'zoozone' cage. Providing the enclosure is well ventilated, secure and has plenty of floorspace, there are really lots of options out there!

They aren't a traditional pet, and don't make good pets for most people. They aren't easy to take care of, and many people don't do a good job of it, either due to not researching properly or by relying on the tons of outdated and outright dangerous information still on the web and in print. They are up at night and sleep during the day, make noise at night running on their wheel (mandatory solid-surface wheel), must be kept warm year-round or they get sick and can die (72-80F at all times), and are not nearly as affectionate as other pets, if at all. They need a solid-floored cage with at least 6 square feet of floor space. Wood bedding and water bottles should never be used with them. Young ones will poop on you, and cleaning a poop-covered wheel will be a nightly ritual for you if you own one. For cages, we've used large sterilite tubs connected with PVC pipes, the larger Marchioro cages found at pet stores, and now use Ferret Nation cages with metal pans in the bottom, with fabric liners as bedding, fleece bags to snuggle/sleep in, and glass condiment bowls for food and water. Before deciding, please visit the International Hedgehog Association webpages (hedgehogclub.com) and the forums at hedgehogcentral.com and chins-n-hedgies.com which have a large population of long-time hedgehog owners who can answer any questions you may have.

nocturnal and like to run on wheels.. generally solitary.. yep, almost like a bigger hamster.. except they have quills LOL if you handle them often, they can be good little pets. If you dont handle them, then you'll get a hedgehog that balls up and hisses. C&C cages are best.. they are an inexpensive way to build a large enough cage.
