Why is there no right click button on a Mac trackpad?
-
I've seen a few variations of multiple desktops implemented for various operating systems. I'm not too impressed with what I see available for Windows, but maybe one day it'll get there. After playing around with the different virtual desktops, I came to like the Mac spaces the best. Not long ago I was able to play around with a Macbook for a bit to see how simple tasks worked. The main thing that I liked about the spaces was the ability to navigate around the various spaces with the trackpad. While that impressed me, I was also simultaneously disappointed that there wasn't a right click on the track pad. Maybe right clicks are rarely used on Macs or something; I can't say from experience. I just found right clicking with the trackpad to be very tedious. My main problem with the trackpad right clicking is that it just doesn't seem as efficient to me. There may be other ways of right clicking, but I only know of two: 1. I could either tap with two fingers on the trackpad, or 2. I could press down the bottom right corner of the trackpad. I have never liked tapping on any touchpad. One of the first things I do when I start using a laptop with a touchpad is to disable the "Tap to Click" feature. Movement across a touchpad is fine, but tapping always seemed too finicky to me. I would constantly have clicks happen when I didn't want them. I clicked all over the place on the trackpad to see where I had to click to get a right click. It ended up being on the bottom part of the trackpad, maybe 70% of the way over to the right side. Since there aren't two distinct buttons for left and right clicking, I found clicking near that 70% mark would often give me the wrong clicks. This mean if I wanted to click for right clicks, I had to move my finger to the far bottom right of this huge trackpad. Not have distinct buttons causes me to need to move further to guarantee that I get the click I want. Is there some reason for the trackpad being a single button? I honestly think that just the trackpad itself would keep me from buying a Macbook. If I wanted to do away with buttons, I may as well just get a tablet of some sort. When I use a notebook, I'm after portable, efficient computing. I think the flicking gestures for space navigation is more efficient. I don't think that's the case for not having a separate right click button. When I told my sister about these things (the one that owns the Macbook), she said it works just fine for her. Yes, it will work just fine for most people. The problem is that I feel like I'm downgrading my cursor controls when I switch to a trackpad. Every so often my friends and I will start playing things like World of Warcraft together. I have played that game for years without a mouse, just using my touchpad. I think I can give most people a run for their money in PvP. I feel like it would be impossible to get the same performance using a trackpad. So why does the trackpad only have one button? Are there versions with two buttons? Is there maybe some other way to right click that could allow me to precisely and rapidly carry out numerous consecutive mouse clicks and mouse drags? What's your opinion of the trackpad when compared with other touchpads? @ƃʍɐp ʇıdsuɹnʇ - Now I do remember reading about the ctrl + click for right clicks. To me that's just adding complexity to what could have easily been a single click. As for keeping another finger in the bottom right corner, I guess that's something to screw around with as a possibility. I'd have to say that two buttons located right next to each other is a much better design. I'm not quite sure what's up with the sarcasm. You offered two alternative ways to click, then respond as if you solved my problem. I suppose I should just let fanboys be... But yeah, thanks for offering those alternatives. I'm still wondering what's up with the trackpad design.
