What is the best teacher's college in Ontario?

Question about teachers college and the job market for teachers in Canada 10 points!?

  • I want to become a teacher primary junior stream k-6 I'm in University right now. I hear the job market for teachers in Ontario is very tight and its nearly impossible to get a job or even get onto the supply list. My plans are to move to Alberta or Saskatchewan because I hear its easier to get onto the supply list there and get a job as a teacher fulltime. I'll be applying to teachers college in a couple of years would it be better to go to teachers college in Alberta or Saskatchewan? My plans down the road is to come back to Ontario and live and teach I just want to go to Alberta or Saskatchewan for a couple of years to gain enough teaching experience under my belt. Would it be better to apply to teachers college in Alberta or Saskatchewan?

  • Answer:

Yes it is really hard to get into teaching in Ontario, and it is that way everywhere in Canada in fact. Only reason parts of Saskatchewan and Alberta are easier to get into is because they need more teachers in their rural areas. They are also lacking teachers in aboriginal communities and reserves. If you're ok with working in a reserve and/or a rural area, then I recommend you going to school in the prairies. Reason for that is because some universities offer a full 12month program that includes certification to work with aboriginal communities, which could help you in standing out. Otherwise, if your long term plan is to work in Ontario, I just suggest you start in Ontario, because there is an equal amount of qualified people with experience wanting to get a permanent teaching position and the only way that happens is by making connections with the board. The latter is achieved by being in their sub list and actually subing in different schools so they can be familiar with your work and with you. It's a hard decision, for your sake, I hope there will be more teaching positions in the future but for now, it's getting quite saturated.
