Can an American work in Montreal?

I'm an American. Will I be able to find a job in Montreal without getting a work visa for the summer?

  • I am planning on spending my summer in Montreal, however, I won't be able to afford to stay there unless I find a job. I am a native English speaker, but I spent a year in Paris, France and my French is pretty decent. I would love to find a job as a waiter or something along those lines, but I don't want to get there and have no one hire me. I know a lot of places might not hire me just because they don't want to deal with all the work visa stuff so I was hoping people would hire me under-the-table. Is this likely?

  • Answer:

Do what I did bro. Run Cuban cigars across the border. Sell them for twice what you paid and you can make thousands in one trip. It ain't worth getting a work visa for the summer. It is hard to get one and won't be approved for that short period of time.

Absolutely not. Canada is nothing like the US, where work as an illegal is easy to find. Our workforce is heavily regulated...and no business owner is going to risk their license, their insurance, their money and their livelihood, just to save a couple bucks by hiring an American. You will stick out like a sore thumb here....people will know you are an American, just from the way you talk....There are huge penalties for a business that hires illegals here......nor do Canadians suffer illegals well. French in Quebec is also quite different from the French spoken in France. You would likely have a hard time communicating to the locals.

You can't work in Canada without a work permit. Nobody will hire you without a Social Insurance Number (SIN), and you can't get one of those without a work permit. Canada is not like the USA - working as an illegal here is very, very difficult. We are not like the USA.

Your american and want to work in another country so of course you need a visa to do that, don't go to another country intending to break their laws!

Not likely at all.Employers would not hire someone without a work visa.

America is not the only country that doesn't want "illegals" coming over the border to take our jobs. We have thousands of Canadian students looking for summer jobs, why would any employer risk a heavy fine to hire you?
