Can the retail store still sue me?

Can an insurance company sue the owner of a store for something that the previous store owner did?

  • I work at a retail store and we got a call today from an insurance company that says they are filing a lawsuit for fire damage against the owner of the store. The fire was caused by a water heater that was sold 7 months prior to the current owner taking over and was not even installed by the store but by a contractor. The water heater was bought back in 03 and apparently the fire was just recently. The insurance company paid the people for the damages but now the company is suing the store owner for something he never had anything to do with. Is there any actual legal grounds that they can sue us under?
