How do I clean black mold?

How to clean black mold on wood floors?

  • Answer:

Hi, This can be a serious issue. If the mold is on top from dog urine, it may not be an issue. I do not recommend using bleach. I would use a Quality disinfectant with mold killing properties to it. This you can get at a Supply store and Home Dept or Menard's has a full line of Professional grade cleaning products. If you think it is a more serious problem that the wood is rotting and mold os part of that process, then the those planks need to eb removed. I would at this time consider using a professional contractor experienced in this area to perform the work. Below are so other options. If you are going to clean it by hand, I would try a Magic Eraser cleaning pad and plain water to clean the floor. Another little more expensive option is to use a Steam Floor Mop to clean the floor. Haan, Oreck and Bissell all make good quality Steam Floor Mops. The investment is not too much and it can be used on all your hard floors throughout your home. Steam floor mops are a great way to clean the floors and they really do work. I have been in the cleaning business for over 30 years and there are many ways to clean floors. I recently discovered a website that is dedicated to clean floors. The site to my surprised was free and after spending some time reviewing the site, I discovered that the site was accurate with its information. I would recommend checking this website out for cleaning all floors including wood, laminate, tile, stone, concrete, marble, ceramic, grout, vinyl, etc. The link is as follows, it is worth the visit and will guide you to how to clean all the floors in a home or a commercial building. Good Luck. http://www.keepingfloorsclean.com/

A bleach solution. I normally wouldn't recommend bleach on wood but if you have mold growing out of the wood then the surface is already damaged and needs to be resurfaced.

There is no safe or effective way to remove mold from wood floors or any other organic and porous surface. The contaminate planks will have to be carefully removed and disposed of. The source of moisture that caused the wood floors to grow mold, needs to be eliminated as well, as mold only thrives under moist conditions (RH at or above 60%) Depending on how widespread is the infestation, you might need to decontaminate the surrounding areas with an anti-fungal product. You can then replace the wood floors and if the place is prone to moisture, run a dehumidifier to keep things dry, so the mold won't grow back. If you are positively sure that you are dealing with black mold or if the infestation is too widespread, call a professional mold removal specialist. Black mold is highly toxic and can only be safely removed with proper equipment, precautions and gear. Non toxic mold species can also make you sick if you stir them up. They are living things and they will release more spores in the air when disturbed. Mold spores are one of the main triggers of allergy symptoms. In addition, stirring so many spores in the air, may cause a broader infestation. Be cautious and don't mess with mold if you are not 100% sure of what you are doing.

My fisrt guess is that if it's black mold, get a testing kit at Home Depot or Lowe's so you know what you are dealing with. If its toxic mold then you should probably have a professional mold person come and take care of the problem. There is a lot of information out there about this.
