How do you cook a spiral ham?

How to cook a ham in the crock pot?

  • Okay, I need the cooks and chefs out there to give me some tips on cooking my holiday ham! I am not a cook so please bear with me! When I make ham it is usually a small (maybe 2lbs, if that) pre-cooked ham. I boil it until it's heated thru and serve. This year I am cooking for a bigger crowd and need to make a bigger ham. When I mentioned that I boil my ham, a few eye brows were raised! Whatever! So I thought why not throw that puppy in the crock pot? So my questions are. Can I put a pre-cooked ham in the crock pot or should I do a raw ham and what should I use to flavor it with, and can I use the leftover juices in the crock pot to make a ham gravy? Please give me some info, along with cooking times!

Here are two recipes, one for a pre-cooked ham and one for a raw ham. A slow cooker allows you to heat your precooked ham without tending to it as often as you would in the oven. You get a more tender outside on the ham than you would roasting it at a higher temperature in the oven. The seasonings you use on the ham are flexible, so experiment with different flavors or make your own ham glaze based on your taste preferences. The leftovers work well in sandwiches or other ham dishes. Things You'll Need Ham Apple cider Brown sugar Maple syrup Cinnamon Nutmeg Orange slices Step 1 Place the precooked ham in the slow cooker. Pour apple cider over the ham to cover it about halfway. The apple cider helps flavor the ham and keep it moist during the slow cooking process. Step 2 Sprinkle 1/3 cup of brown sugar onto the ham and rub it into the meat. Drizzle 3 to 4 tbsp. of maple syrup over the ham. Sprinkle the meat with cinnamon and nutmeg to taste based on your personal preferences. Step 3 Cut two oranges into thin slices. Arrange the orange slices on top of the ham. Step 4 Place the lid on top of the slow cooker. Turn it on the low setting and slow cook the ham for about six to eight hours. You can also cook it on the high setting for four to six hours if you are short on time. Step 5 Remove the ham from the slow cooker and pull off the orange slices. Cut the ham into slices for serving. Drizzle the juices in the slow cooker over the ham if desired to add moisture while serving the meat. Tips and Warnings Add sweet potatoes to the slow cooker for an easy side dish that works well with the sweet flavors. Skip the brown sugar and maple syrup if you don't like a sweet flavor in your ham. Use water or vegetable stock to moisten the ham and add your favorite spices to season it. Honey also works in place of the maple syrup if you prefer the taste. **************************************... Step 1Precook your ham in a pot of simmering water for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Pat it dry, and insert whole cloves into the surface of the meat. Distribute them across the entire ham. Step 2 Peel, core and slice the apples. Spread the slices across the bottom of the slow cooker. Place the ham on top. Step 3 Glaze the top of the ham with maple syrup if you want a richly sweet dish. Spread the brown sugar across the surface of the ham. If you used syrup, press the sugar into the syrup with a wooden spoon. Step 4 Combine apple cider, red wine or dark ale, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg and ground ginger. Pour the liquid into the slow cooker around the ham. Don't pour it directly over the ham. Sprinkle the orange rind evenly across the top of the ham and the liquid. Step 5 Cover the slow cooker. Cook the ham on low heat for 6 to 8 hours or on high heat for 5 to 6 hours. Tips and Warnings Remove the cloves before serving. Thicken the liquid with corn starch if necessary to create a sweet gravy. Things You'll Need 5- to 6-pound ham 2 tablespoons whole cloves 4 to 6 apples 1/2 cup maple syrup (optional) 1 cup brown sugar 3 cups apple cider, red wine or dark ale 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon 1 tablespoon ground nutmeg 2 tablespoons ground ginger 1 tablespoon orange rind **************************************... Ham Gravy Recipe.Consider making ham gravy if you are looking for an inexpensive way to add flavor to your food. A piece of meat or recipe may have come out a bit dry or charred, but a nice amount of ham gravy is sure to turn a miss into a hit. Recipe for Ham Gravy Ingredients 1 cup of ham drippings 4 tablespoons of all-purpose flour ½ cup of cold water ¼ teaspoon of kosher salt 2 drops of gravy master seasoning 1 teaspoon of brown sugar Place the ham droppings in a skillet, and boil them. Once brought to a boil, reduce the heat. Next, in a bowl, mix together the flour and the water. You should now have a runny paste. Slowly add this mixture to the ham drippings. Whisk the mixture while adding it. You want to keep whisking until the entire mixture has been added to the drippings and the mixture has thickened in texture. Next, add the salt to the mixture, taking time to fully mix it in, and then add the gravy master. Then add the brown sugar. Again, be sure to whisk the gravy so that the ingredients are fully combined and the gravy is thick in texture. Note: You can save ham drippings for quite some time. Whenever you buy ham, drain as much from the ham as you can. Instead of throwing this away, you can save it later for your recipes for gravy.

Depending on the size of the ham it should cook about 8 hours on low. You can add brown sugar to the bottom of the pot than rub some on the ham. If you want you can add pineapple slices or chunks. Add about an inch of water. This is for a precooked ham. You really don't need gravy, just pour some of the juices on the ham after you slice it. Good luck!

I would not boil the ham. It will remove a lot of the flavor. It's already cooked and only needs heated up. The eyebrows are raised because they are probably folks who are not looking forward to eating this flavorless ham. - sorry, just being truthful. Put it in the crock pot on low for 8 hours or high for 4 hours. Add some pineapple juice, brown sugar and season a bit. You can use the juices for gravy. Unless it's a 'fresh' ham, it's already cooked.

Hi Isabel,Just use the pineapple as a garnish and dont cook it. If you did want to serve it warm do it in a skillet on the top of the stove. Just colour the pineapple slightly for effect, you could sprinkle over a touch of brown sugar to help colour it. Being precooked you only want to reheat the ham so I would only give it about 10 minutes per pound if the ham is a t rom temperature and maybe 15 minutes if straight from the fridge. Use your best judgement here though. If you stick a skewer into the fattest part , for abot 30 seconds and it is hot when you pull it out the it will be fine. What Chefs do it touch the part just under the bottom lip before the chin and you will soon know if it is hot enough!I hope this helps, all the best.Rab
