What does it mean if colleges are sending me emails?
-
Hi! I'm a sophomore in high school and I took the PSATs a while ago. Ever since then I've been getting emails from a bunch of different colleges. I scored in the highest area (under ivy schools and private schools) for future acceptance. I know they got my information from the test, but I was wondering if I should take it as a good sign that they are emailing me? Did anyone who is now in college have this experience ever? Colleges I received emails from include the following: Washington University of St. Louis, Rice University, Walden University, The University of Pennsylvania, St. John's, Missouri University of Science and Technology, and Columbia University. I also got a few packets from some of the ones I'm interested in (Columbia, Washington, Pennsylvania) but I wasn't sure if I should further contact said colleges considering I'm only a sophomore. Any advice on that would also be appreciated! Thanks(:

Answer:
It means they like your scores, and you fit in some way the profile of students who they tend to accept and who tend to enroll there. Colleges usually target students who they want to attract, and who they think they have a chance at (no point in wasting money and effort on someone who looks like they'll never be interested). Because of the major you're interested in, and where you live, and where you go to school, and your extracurriculars, and probably a lot of other details they already know about you, they think you might be a good fit for them. It can't hurt to check them out a little further. There are some very good smaller schools on that list that you might not be familiar with. Look over their websites, visit if you happen to be in the neighborhood, talk to people who might know something about them. Email or call their admissions offices if you have specific questions. You don't have to make any serious commitments yet, but it's not too early to be shopping around.

Yes the test is given by the College Board company so yes theat is how they know but they like to email you colleges that are based on your scores. I did not getany from the colleges I applied to now though, but I did get accepted to ones they didn't email me. I wouldn't worry about it.
Same things been happening to me (I am also a sophomore. I actually got a few of the same universities as you haha). And it will keep happening to us until we apply for colleges. Beyond that actually. BRING ON THE SPAM ;). But sure fill out the information if you want! It can never hurt to show you have interest in a certain college! And always keep your options open as for where you want to go! But only fill out the ones you actually care about. because, trust me, the emails will just keep increasing in volume from here on out.
