What will the human population be in the year 2100?

The population of the Earth at the beginning of 1976 was 4 billion. Assume the rate of growth is 2% per year..?

  • (a) write down the formula for P, the population of the Eath in year T, T greater than 1976. (b) What will be the population in 1976? (c) When will the population reach 10 billion? i know its something to do with exponential growth but i don't even know where to start!! something like Population = original population E ^KT?! HELP!

  • Answer:

    a) p = 4(1 + 0.02)^(t - 1976) b) Setting t = 1976, gives 4 billion. c) 10 = 4(1.02)^(t - 1976) 2.5 = (1.02)^(t - 1976) log(2.5) = (t - 1976)log(1.02) (t - 1976) = log(2.5) / log(1.02) (t - 1976) = 46.27 t = 1976 + 46 = around 2022
