Questions about College Majors?

A few questions about dropping out of college...?

  • Ok, so here's the predicament: I'm going to a university right now for Engineering, and this is my second semester of school (this is my first full year of college so right now I'm classified as a second-semester freshman) and honestly, I hate my classes and everything. I really want to switch to medicine to become a doctor of sorts, but I'm not entirely sure what kind yet. My current college GPA from last semester is a 3.45 or something very close to that, but if I finish out this semester I WILL damage my GPA. I'm barely passing any of my classes, I just don't understand any of them no matter how much I study and engineering really just isn't for me. I've loved biology and human anatomy and honestly have no idea why I picked engineering. A little background history, I have a 33 on the ACT and I had a 4.13 GPA in high school. I will admit I wasn't 100% serious last semester but this semester I have tried hard, but I just hate physics and calculus, and those are my two major courses as a mechanical engineer. I just don't want to do engineering anymore period. The major scholarship keeping me here at my current college is dependent on the fact that my major STAYS some sort of engineering; if I were to go to the admissions office right now and switch to whatever major of doctoring I wanted to (not sure on that yet) I'm pretty sure I would no longer qualify as a student, unless it's required by whoever that they must pay me to go to school until the end of this semester. I NEED to drop out of this college in order to save my GPA. I have plans on going to this other local college (also a university) but if I cannot get into it due to an absence of scholarships, then there is a local community college I can go to for a while before switching to the other college. None of my courses this semester besides Chemistry II are relevant towards a medical-based major. So my questions are: 1. What kind of major am I looking at to become a doctor? What's the actual terminology for it? 2. I understand that if I drop out of college this semester that I will have W's (for withdrawed) on my transcript for the four courses I'm currently taking. However, do you think the college I'm looking to go to will necessarily CARE about the 3 that aren't pertinent to my major? I know some W's are okay and I understand that 4 W's in one semester looks bad, but I feel like I can possibly explain to the college that I just wanted to change majors. Again, will this other college possibly decline me scholarships even though I have a 33 ACT and a 3.45 GPA just because of dropping out? 3. Is there a ceiling date where you can no longer drop out? I'm going to have to tell my parents about all of this, but I feel like they'd be impressed by my decision if I get all this information together and pretty much do everything myself. But is there a point in this current semester that I can no longer drop out? 4. If I ask for my transcript right now while still enlisted in the college, will it show that I am currently enrolled in the college I am at right now? What I mean is, will it show that I am currently taking the four classes I'm taking right now? 5. Can I send in a resume to the other college while still enlisted in this college, or will I have to drop out first? 6. Do you think I will be able to get enough scholarships to attend this other college despite being a college drop out with my current GPA and my ACT score? I know for a fact this other college offers more money than the one I'm at right now. I'm going to go talk to some counselors this week about all of this, but I figured while I'm waiting I could ask the community and hopefully go into the meetings with a bit of background information. If I have any other questions I'll post. Thank you so much if you've read this far!

  • Answer:

These are serious questions that you need to meet with your school's advisor to discuss, not here. We do not know the regulations of your school so we don't know things such as the deadline for dropping out or how many W's you can have max. However, most people get a biology degree or something similar to go on to med school. But please, email your advisor ASAP.
