How to download long text message (multimedia file) on HTC tattoo?

I have an HTC Tattoo and one of my friends has sent me a very long text. Instead of it showing up as a text, it has a "download" button in the body of what would be the text message, and in the message information it says that it's a "multimedia message" even though it;s just text. When try to download it nothing happens, I have downloaded the app "Handcent" and tried to download it through that but still nothing happens. Any idea how I can read my message?
