College prep vs. honors and college prep vs. AP?

University Scholars vs. Honors College?

  • I got a letter today that was rather confusing from Stony Brook, where I have already been accepted. It congratulated me on being accepted to the University Scholars Program, which I had not applied to. However, it said that they regret to inform me that I have not been accepted to the Honors College or the Scholars for Medicine program, which I did apply to. I was wondering what the University Scholars Program is versus the Honors College and what the Honors College has that the University Scholars program doesn't. Any insight would be helpful.

  • Answer:

The Scholar fro Medicine program offers a significant benefit: admission to medical school from college, assuming a high school student knows which medical school he wants to attend from high school. The Honors College Offers..... "A: Beware of the difference between an honors program and a true Honors College . Honors programs typically do not offer a four-year series of dedicated seminars outside of a student's major. Nor do they typically offer the opportunity for housing as a group, or the four years of special advising, early course registration, cultural enrichment, and scholarships that characterize Stony Brook University 's Honors College ." 1) Seminars outside a student's major limited to Honors college students. Realistically there cannot be many choices due to the limited number of Honors College Students. These seminars described as classes with 20 students, actually too large to be a seminar, replace the required general education classes required of Stonybrook students, where a student chooses his General Education classes from a wide variety of classes. 2) Housing in the same dorm. 3)Special advising. 4) Early course registration. 5) Cultural enrichment. Diversity is a factor in selection. 6) Scholarships http://www.stonybrook.edu/uaa/honorscollege/faqs.shtml#18 University Scholars offers... 1. Priority registration privileges within their class throughout their Stony Brook careers. 2. Honors sections of first-year courses, including the first-year seminars and other academic courses. 3. Special academic advising, including help in choosing the best courses to reach their goals. 4. Opportunities to participate in special symposia, trips, and other extracurricular activities. http://www.stonybrook.edu/uaa/universityscholars/about.shtml http://www.stonybrook.edu/ugadmissions/newhonors/index.shtml
