How long should I leave my hair dye in if I want to dye my dark hair lighter?

• I naturally have a VERY dark hair color. Almost black, it's very dark brown. I want to dye it a medium brown with reddish undertones. I've already tried the dye I like and it only came out on my hair line and some parts of my roots because I did my roots first and then the rest of my hair. I have extremely thick, dark hair that is past my shoulders but above my waist. L'oreal Healthy Look creme gloss color in Light Reddish Brown is the box that I used the first time and I already have the second box. The first time I tried dying my hair I did my roots first and then I moved on to the rest of my hair. I left the dye in my hair for about 15 minutes so that is why I think it didn't come out well. I used a brush to get my roots and the rest of my hair. It only dyed the underside of my bangs and my baby hairs and I like the color! How long should leave the dye in next time? When should I dye my hair because I want my hair to have a break from the chemicals. Do you have any tips or suggestions for what I should do when I dye my hair?
