How do I get into reading a book and what are some good books?

HELP!What are good BOOKS with little to no romance?Need a BOOK!FAST!!!?

  • I need a BOOK for a class project. It MUST have at least 100 pages, MUST BE AT YOUNG ADULT reading level NOTHING LOWER, and MUST have a story/plot that is told. There's also a small list of what books aren't allowed, example, no one in the same class can have the same book (Hunger Games Harry Potter,Percy Jackson, Mortal Instruments are all taken).Point I need a book FAST! I guess you could call me a tomboy or so; I am almost as far from feminine as one can get. In other words, NO chick-lit, mushy, romance, etc. I REALLY DON'T GIVE A CRAP about "but their love mustn't be", or "but it all changes when *insert guy name* comes along" or "can they ever resist the irresistable hottie hunk/babe that is ___", or "but which lover should I choose DX", or any other lame crap.I also don't care for "but what if she's not pretty enough for prom D: OH NO her world is crumbling" or "but she/I am TOO beautiful,I don't want it take it back DX I mustn't be pretty!". If you noticed that "I" in there, yes the whole first person "Im going to brag about my sexy hotness and badassery" thing does NOT work for me; please NO "I AM BEOWULF"s, no one likes Mary Sue/Gary Stu especially not one who's boasting away over 100 pages for NO reason (if its a journal sure maybe I guess but just wow, no); first person isn't an issue, it just depends on HOW it's done. Things I like: I like Action/Adventure, Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Suspense/Thriller, Dark Humor (and regular Humor). I also like mangas/animes (only read two mangas so far Air Gear and Soul Eater).Examples of some things I like are... Animes: Blood+,Air Gear,Devil May Cry,Soul Eater,D Gray Man,Yu Yu Hakusho,Black Lagoon, etc (all shonen/"guy's/tomboy's" based).Other Shows:Xena,Dark Angel,X-Men Evolution,Smallville (when it was good/before it was about couples & Lois' feelings -.-),Heroes,Airbender,Dead Like Me,etc. Books:A Series of Unfortunate Events, Holes, HP,Lewis Carroll (anything),etc. This is to give you an idea of what kinds of things interest me. I do NOT WANT/NEED any anime, tv show, songs, mangas/comics,etc recommendations I ONLY NEED/WANT a BOOK. NOTHING ELSE BUT A BOOK! Also, I really like the whole "kick-butt" female thing, if there are any books with a female as the MAIN character, those would be nice. However I noticed when most books have ONE character as lead they feel the "need" to have the "insert love interest/insert love triangle" cliche happen and to the point that it is also about of the main plot, while books that have groups tend to not really focus on such, either dont have it or work into it gradually where its a subplot or barely there at all. NO-NOs and DISLIKES: While I don't mind some shows/movies based in the past (1800s and beyond), I don't really prefer to read about them. PLEASE NO pilgrim/calm countryside/little house on prairie/pride&prejudice/scarlet letter books.<---this means NO, if you skimmed/skipped you missed this or you're trolling me x( Basically:little to no romance (I know its hard to say 0 at all so I guess I'm willing to bare if its limited), NO chick-lit issues/girly problems (eg prom drama,not/too pretty, love triangles, etc), preferably no pompous cocky ego-freak lead especially not if it's 1st person (stuck up,snobby, whiny,or any other universal annoyance lead characters dont work for me either). Also no faeries/fairies (idk I just don't care for it). Sorry this is so long/thorough and sorry if it seems picky. I've been looking for WEEKS (day and night) and I am SERIOUSLY SERIOUSLY running out of time. PLEASE take me serious. This is a repost, I had to emphasize some words because last time they were ignored.Don't just type random "answers", or suggest chick-lit I DESPISE IT.We can't have things that are on curriculum like Animal Farm,Huckleberry,Pride&Prejudice,Scarlet... Letter, Lord of Flies,Tears of a Tiger,Macbeth,Hamlet, and Gatsby;given I hated those [sans Gatsby] anyway I don't mind this. PLEASE make SURE the book is at YOUNG ADULT anything below ISN'T ALLOWED! Lastly, I can't stress this enough BOOKS ONLY, NO documentaries/essays/etc, and THE BOOK MUST BE AT YOUNG ADULT LEVEL NOTHING LOWER! That is assignment's RULE, I didn't make that part the school did, that means I have to stick to that. And I have to repeat myself again, so no one complain why things are emphasized/caps-locked. DO NOT POST THESE PLEASE! The following books are NOT ALLOWED because THEY ARE ALREADY TAKEN; we are NOT ALLOWED to have the SAME book as anyone in the class: Hunger Games Harry Potter Percy Jackson Mortal Instruments We also can NOT have the following because they are apart of curriculum and we CAN'T have anything apart of curriculum: Animal Farm (no comment) Huckleberry (meh, never finished XD) Pride&Prejudice (meh...you should know how I feel about this by now) Scarlet Letter (SUPER hated) Lord of Flies (hated) Tears of a Tiger (hated) Macbeth Hamlet Gatsby If you mention these books, all I can say nicely at this point is "go away" because I posted this question TWICE,EXTRA EMPHASIZED THIS ONE, and added additional details. Yet people still do it. If it's still not clear by now, I don't know what to say/do @_@ You mentioning them comes off now that you're trollin

Battle Royale by Koushun Takami - Amazing book! Its very intense, thrilling, and action packed, I couldn't stop reading it. It has little/no romance, and overall is just an amazing read. If you have read the Hunger games, this book was written before, and has almost the exact same premise as the Hunger games. The book has also been adapted into a film, and magna series. Plot = a class of junior high school students is taken to a deserted island where, as part of a ruthless authoritarian program, they are provided arms and forced to kill one another until only one survivor is left standing. Blood Red Road by Moira Young- Awesome book, the writing is a little different since the author uses a lot of slang, but it only takes a few pages to get use too. Very strong main female character, there is a little romance in the book, but overall not much, one romantic scene(2pages) in the whole book which is 459pages long. Its in the young adult section. Lots of action, within the first chapter and throughout the whole book, grabs your attention right from the start. Plot = Saba has spent her whole life in Silverlake.. The Wrecker civilization has long been destroyed, leaving only landfills for Saba and her family to scavenge from. That's fine by her, as long as her twin brother Lugh is around. But when a monster sandstorm arrives, along with four cloaked horsemen, Saba's world is shattered. Lugh is captured, and Saba embarks on an epic quest to get him back.Suddenly thrown into the lawless, ugly reality of the world outside of desolate Silverlake, Saba is lost without Lugh to guide her. So perhaps the most surprising thing of all is what Saba learns about herself: she's a fierce fighter, an unbeatable survivor, and a cunning opponent. And she has the power to take down a corrupt society from the inside. Teamed up with a daredevil named Jack and a gang of girl revolutionaries called the Free Hawks, Saba stages a showdown that will change the course of her own civilization. Enders game by Orson Scott Card. Plot = in order to develop a secure defense against a hostile alien race's next attack, government agencies breed child geniuses and train them as soldiers. A brilliant young boy, Andrew "Ender" Wiggin lives with his kind but distant parents, his sadistic brother Peter, and the person he loves more than anyone else, his sister Valentine. Peter and Valentine were candidates for the soldier-training program but didn't make the cut—young Ender is the Wiggin drafted to the orbiting Battle School for rigorous military training. Ender's skills make him a leader in school and respected in the Battle Room, where children play at mock battles in zero gravity. Yet growing up in an artificial community of young soldiers Ender suffers greatly from isolation, rivalry from his peers, pressure from the adult teachers, and an unsettling fear of the alien invaders. His psychological battles include loneliness, fear that he is becoming like the cruel brother he remembers, and fanning the flames of devotion to his beloved sister. Is Ender the general Earth needs? But Ender is not the only result of the genetic experiments. The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway for almost as long. Ender's two older siblings are every bit as unusual as he is, but in very different ways. Between the three of them lie the abilities to remake a world. If, that is, the world survives. Metro 2033 should fit all your expectations, except it doesn't have a female protagonist.

Rob.

My two favorite authors are Kurt Vonnegut "Sirens of Titan" and Carl Hiaasen. Not sure they're on your list but they are good reading.

Catch-22 by Joseph Heller is your book. A bit over 500 pages long, littered with darkish humor and great characters. Requires a decently high reading level, noting insurmountable however. edit: Anything by Kurt Vonnegut is good as well.

Ship breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi Printz Award Winner as best young adult book in 2011 In a futuristic world, teenaged Nailer scavenges copper wiring from grounded oil tankers for a living, but when he finds a beached clipper ship with a girl in the wreckage, he has to decide if he should strip the ship for its wealth or rescue the girl. Chill, it will be OK.

If you can't find a book you like, suck it up and read one you don't. It's a project. Once you read it and do whatever you have to do on it, and forget about it. Try Alanna: the song of the lioness She's pretty kick butt, I can't totally remember if this series is young adult I'm pretty sure it is. It's hard to find a young adult book not about romance, but I can understand where your coming from, it certainly gets tired after awhile. Also try Hollowland by Amanda Hocking, very little romance and it's about zombies.
