What are the signs of labor?

What are signs of a dog going into labor?

  • So we are breeders of German Shepherd Dogs. Please don't be rude saying "I should know when my dog is going into labor" because my dog does it different each year. Last year before she went into labor, she starting digging on the couches so we put her in the dog house (it's like a big shed, dog house good for the puppies). Then my family walked down to the river with our male dog and we heard yelping. When we came back up, she had her puppies. She is past her due date. She was due just thsi last Friday and it's Monday now. She is pacing around, but now she is laying down, panting lots and seems tired but she will still get up and walk if she needs to. She has been digging outside in the ground, been trying to get under this trailer (she always wants to give birth under the trailer but we keep her inside). What are other signs?

  • Answer:

Ah, so you know what you are doing, good. I don't know the answer as all my pets get spayed & neutered. You had all the genetic testing done? You've shown the dogs? You have a breeding mentor? The ***** has had all her prenatal care and she & the pups are going to the vet in the first 24 hours? GREAT!!! Congrats. I would hate to think you were just another backyard breeder/puppy mill. You know some one that doesn't test to see if the mating pair is passing on problems common to the breed. I would hate to think you are just making pups for the sake of making pups when there are so many, 3-4 million killed EVERY year just because too many are born.

You said you are a "breeder of German Shepherd Dogs" and if that is the case you already know the answer. Obviously you have had pre-natal care done with this dog with a reproductive vet specialist. You would have had her x-rayed in the last week, what did the vet say? Your Champion bitches health is at stake, I strongly urge you to call your veterinary reproductive specialist with any questions. Since the did see your dog in the last week they will know the answer. Three days past her due date is serious.

If she is past her due date she should be at the VET. Responsible breeders don't ask important questions of strangers. They call their vets or their breeding mentors for advice. I recommend you do the same as few people on here have ever successfully whelped a litter.

Maybe milk coming from her nipples? If she goes much longer, you should take her to the vet.
