Files not registering default file type?

• So ever since I backed up all of my digital work from Adobe programs like Photoshop, Flash, etc, I noticed that the icons on my PSD files are not what they used to be. They look lost. I mean when I click on the files using my computer, It opens up a menu giving me a bunch of options to use to open up my file instead of automatically opening up in Photoshop as they should! Even stranger, Adobe Photoshop is not even in the list of programs to select for opening the file. Even stranger still, when I do find my photoshop and click on that program to select it as the default program, it does not respond. I can still open up photoshop individually and find the file using file>open file from location, to open up my files and use them. So my programs are all still intact, but now there is this disassociation going on. I backed up my files using an HP external harddrive with a USB 3.0 port. I have Windows 7 and Photoshop CS.5 What in the world is going on?
