How to find the real owner of a domain ?

I was recently asked to find out who owns a website and thinking it was easy to do, I was surprised to find out that the site I'm trying to find the owner shows the owner as Domains By Proxy, LLC. I found out that people are using this service to hide their identity. Is there any way to find out who owns a particular website without legal action?
