How does an adult tonsillectomy and adenoidecomy normally go?
-
I'm a 19 year old female, 20 this November. I have heard that the procedure is much more painful as an adult than a small child... I'm just mostly worried about missing my classes. I am having the procedure because my tonsils and adenoids are so swollen that it is causing me sleep apnea, and difficulty breathing throughout the day. I am a healthy, thin girl, and I do not smoke, so it's obviously a problem that my body is doing this. If I get the procedure done on say, a Friday afternoon, I should be good to go to class by Monday, right? How much pain might I be expecting?

Answer:
you're right in saying that it is more painful, however it will take approx. 2 weeks until you can return to your normal daily routine. it's major surgery for adults, so you need all the rest you can get. it's pretty damn painful, and the pain increases to quite a bit of a climax until your scabs start coming off (about a week - ish post op). in my opinion, considering how many times i was getting acute tonsillitis, it was no pain that was unfamiliar to me. the only thing that made it an actual living hell was the fact that i developed an infection in my wounds due to all the infection in my tonsils that came pouring out when they were removed. if i didn't have that problem, i reckon the recovery would have been a LOT less painful. and to miss indiana jones: why don't you try being a bit more polite with your answers? not everyone knows as much as you claim to know when it comes to tonsillectomies.

um WRONG! it doesn't matter your age or how fit you are the recovery process still takes the same amount of time. you are not supposed to be leaving your house for the first TEN DAYS. if you have it on a friday afternoon you would be able to go back to class not that next monday but the monday after that IF you are healing properly and have had no complications. basically you would be missing at least 6 days of classes. if you asked your ENT what you just asked here about having it on a friday and being in class that next monday morning they'd probably laugh out loud.
