How long does a sun rash last?

Why do I develop a rash when I am exposed to sun?

  • I am African American with dark skin and I have noticed that instead of getting a sunburn, when I have prolonged sun exposure, I develop a rash. The longer the sun exposure, the worse the rash. I don't believe that it is a heat rash, because it seems to be from direct sun exposure (like from a day at the beach or walking around on a sunny day) and it happens on the exposed areas of my skin, the tops of my arms and sometimes on the part of chest near my neck that gets sun during the day. The rash sometimes blisters if it's really bad. It lasts for about two weeks and darkens as it heals and sometimes feels mildly itchy. I also seem to have a similar reaction when I use any products with SPF. I've done some reading and it seems like the SPF chemicals just seem to speed up whatever process happens when I have a lot of exposure to sun. This all seems to be a sun allergy or sun rash of some kind, but I'm wondering what the medical name is for it.

Sounds like an allergic reaction. Sometime people are allergic to the ingredients in the sunscreen. Maybe you need to use a more top of the line sunscreen that doesn't contain PABA.
