What do i need to do to become a police officer? I live in New Jersey?

  • I am 18 years of age and i am currently enrolled in Brookdale Community College.i am majoring in Criminal Justice. I want to be a police officer in the future. I would like to know what i need to do to get hired as a police officer? i want to apply myself to the Coast guard after my first year of college. Will Coast guard benefit me to becoming a police officer part time and or full time? How many years of service i need to finish either in part time and/or full time as a coast guard? so i can apply to be a police officer afterwards. What program in the Coast guard will help me become a police officer? What about Security guard and or mall cop? will these job experiences help me get hired as well? I wanted to apply to TSO(transportation security officer). will it help me have a better chance to become a police officer? i was also thinking of volunteering in the police department near where i live and joining the Law Enforcement explorer program and or police cadet. Will this benefit me to become a cop? I am also taking Martial arts like Karate and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Will this help in the police academy? If i join the NRA( national rifle Association), Will this be a favor the police officers will like to see on the resume? And lastly, i am taking CPR and First Aid. I might even do EMT. Will this help me become a police officer?. I would like to know because i am very interested in joining the police force.I want to build up my resume before i apply to the police academy.

    It seems as though you've made a good start and are thinking in the right direction with all your future plans. All that you have listed will set up a great background to get into the academy and for police work. The Coast Guard is great as well. Look into becoming an MP or whatever they call themselves in that branch and talk to your recruiter...tell him what your ultimate destination is. Good luck.
