What should my college major be?

How do I know what to major in for a community college?

  • I'm a senior in high school currently and I have decided, mainly because my family just put two of my sisters through college, that I should go to a community college first as it's financially more viable. So I know which one I would like to go to at this point, but I don't what major to pick, as I only want to go for two years then transfer to a university and major in probably engineering. So what exactly should I major in now? The community college I'm looking at doesn't have exactly what I'm looking for, so should I major in academic and then pick a new major in two years or what? I am not sure if I should try to pick a major that I do not want to transfer in two years or if I should just do academic and then pick the one I want when I transfer to the university. Any tips?

  • Answer:

You don't have to select a major for a community college. Most offer the big two, Associate in Arts and Associate in Science. Arts can lead you to financial and social majors later on. You probably want science. Just work on your core classes and talk to a career counselor. Once you decide on the ultimate goal and the colleges you want to finish your degree in, you'll be able to see what prereqs you'll need and go from there.

I'm afraid that if you go to a community college that does not have engineering courses/an engineering major, you'll be really far behind when you transfer, and it will take you extra time to graduate. Many community colleges offer engineering as a major. Please try to find one that does, and go there. Example here: http://www.sunyorange.edu/admissions/programs/docs/Engineering_Science.pdf If there is no engineering major available to you, then at least take the math and sciences outlined on the attached .pdf while you're at the cc, so you're only behind on the engineering classes.

i think you should take some of the classes needed by the future university you are planning to go while in community college, that way when you go you won't have to repeat classes or waste your time and a class that isn't needed by university. You could also take a class that the other university doesn't offer but i highly doubt they wouldn't have a class from community college. answer mine? http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AviQsJrYYicycbRj5GR_thXty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20120328132525AAtMNZx
