Why did chandrayaan-1 satellite first orbit around the earth and then put into lunar orbit?

Answer:
Its all about the Benjamins. To launch a rocket into a Moon insertion orbit would be prohibitively expensive and the whole chandrayaan mission only cost $39.47 Alright, it cost $90 million, but that is chicken feed for the average satellite, let alone a probe... or eleven separate payloads. The cost savings was pretty amazing. The launch put Chandrayaan into a slightly elliptical LEO, which by firing their rockets briefly at different points in the orbit, slowly increased the apogee of the satellite bit by bit. This allowed for a smaller rocket and eliminated the possibility of a great deal of error, as each firing error could be corrected during the next firing. All in all I think there were something like 14 corrections, which took a long time, but haste makes waste, just ask the Russians.

the orbit around the Earth was to 'set up' for the right 'window' to shoot thru to get the rocket to the right place to intercept the Moon .......in the time it takes for a rocket to leave Earth and get TO the Moon, both the moon and the earth have moved in space.... plus, CHandrayaan had to hit the right point to insert into ORBIT around the Moon and not just shoot on by it......

Cleveland 03/26/12 A good bet it was the work of some great Researchers,.and Scientific people,..!! They planned a look see in a whirl or two around the Earth,.then, plan thrust and fuel sufficient for continuation on into Lunar Orbit,.?! No doubt, they tested directioning and proper area,.and, their plan workerd,.!! Eliasis Yahwehei ( The Main Man )

according to me..there might be 2 reasons:- a-with the gravitation of earth or moon,it might accelerate b-it might not have radio or microwaves,so it had to come closer to earth to transmit its data.. CHANDRAYAN IS our FIRST INDIAN MOON SPACE PROGRAMM.....i respect it..u too....after all there is the mind of INDIAN SCIENTISTS behind it...

if directly sent into the lunar orbit it may have collided if directed wrongly also our rocket propulsion system in India is powerful enough only to launch the satellite into Earth's orbit this is just my opinion

It's common practice to put vehicles into Earth orbit first and then fine tune the next step. Any innaccuracies in the initial path can be corrected for that way.
