Is my cartilage piercing infected?

How long does it take for an infected cartilage piercing to heal?

  • Well I've had my piercing since Dec 17, 2011, it was all working out well and everything was perfect until last Friday the 23 ky cartilage was hurting a lot during school and so I went to the nurse she said it had puss and so she poked it to drain the piercing out while the piercing was still inside then she told me to take it after telling me that there wasn't no puss and that my piercing was just being rejected, so now it's the 28th of March and during the past view days my mom has been draining it out and cleaning it with sea salt soaks and an antiseptic from Claire's oh and one more thing it hasn't closed because my mom put a thread in the hole of my cartilage is that bad? They use it a lot in my country for piercings....i think my body is adapted to pain because it really doesn't hurt at all but it looks bad and infected what should i do?

  • Answer:

Cartilage peircings can be very stubborn, I have had quite a few so I know how it feels! Make sure to keep doing the sea salt soaks. Just mix hot water and sea salt and soak a cotton ball with it. Hold it up to your ear for about 5 minutes. Also, using a cream is not the best thing as it plug the hole, and not allow it to breath. Try putting a dab of tea tree oil on it once or twice a day. I had my Industrial peirced, and mine was badly infectected as well. Tea tree oil can be a little drying, so make sure not to use it too much! So basically just continue with the sea salt soaks, use some tea trea oil and within a few weeks you should see an improvement. Just don't let the hole close! because the infection will be trapped inside, and won't be able to heal.

if it were me i would put the jewellery back in (as your nurse is stupid and should know that you should NEVER take the jewellery out, as it can create an abscess) and get rid of that unsanitary thread! just keep cleaning it and get antibiotics from the doctors. good luck! :)

It's not going to heal if you continue what you're doing. Stop poking at it, get the thread out of your ear and stop using anything from Claire's in or on the piercing. Go to a professional body piercer (NOT Claire's - a tattoo/piercing parlor), get higher quality (sterile) jewelry put in, and keep up with the sea salt soaks. Cartilage piercings can take up to a full year to completely heal, you need to be patient and take care of it right. If it doesn't get better after that, that's when it's time to go to a doctor and not a school nurse.
