What is the state of IT jobs in North and Central Florida?

Jobs in computer science for Florida State U graduates?

  • If you can answer even 1 of the following questions, I'd be very grateful: 1) Does Florida State U (in Tallahassee) have job fairs for Master's in Computer Science graduates? 2) How easy or difficult would it be for an MS CS graduate from FSU to find a job in their field? 3) What would the average salary of such a job be? 4) How is the overall job scenario, in terms of opportunity, difficulty, salary, exposure etc. for an FSU graduate when compared to, say, a good grad school in California? What about compared to any other part of the US? This is really important to me, so please give a sincere answer, or direct me to a place where I can find the above information, because I just can't seem to find anything.

  • Answer:

If you are at FSU, you should be able to get get answers to questions 1 & 2 better than a random person on Yahoo! Answers. As an employer, I have hired many CS majors. The answer to #3 depends on many other factors that you do not provide. Do you have any job experience? If not, do you have any practical development experience (or is all of your CS knowledge "book knowledge")? Depending upon location and years of experience, salary could range from $40K (0 years of experience) to $120K (20+ years of experience) - these are in north Florida. On #4, I have not noted a significant difference in the quality of graduates from one school versus another. There is probably a difference between a top tier school (e.g., Carnegie Mellon) and a bottom dwelling university (no names here...). But in general, the difference in the quality of employees is more of a personal factor than determined by the school they attended.
