Where can I find a fingering chart for a wooden flute?

How to identify the key of my bamboo flute?

  • I have been given a bamboo flute, but have no idea how to tell the key of the flute as I was not given a finger chart for it. The flute is made from bamboo, it is 15.5" long, has 7 holes (holes are from left to right - 1st 6", 2nd 6 3/4", 3rd 7 3/4", 4th 9", 5th - 10", 6th - 10 3/4", 7th - 12 1/4"). It plays nicley but as you can tell am beginner at flute and music so I can't tell what note I am hitting, Can anyone tell me with this vague information what my fingering is. Thanks Michelle

This is just my method. There are others, I'm sure. Cover all the holes and play the note. It'll be a low note so you can't blow hard. Blow gently but steadily and drop your tongue inside your mouth. If you can get that low note to play, figure out what that note is on the piano. That'll be the key of your flute. Then starting with all the holes closed, lift a finger from each hole starting from the bottom. The more holes you uncover in order, the higher the note. That's the basics. Your flute may or may not be tuned to a major scale so the notes up and down might not sound like you expect them to.

compare it to an instrument you know the key of. For example: We know the key of a Piano is C. Play middle C on the piano, then use various fingerings on your flue until you find the note that matches the piano's middle C pitch Perfectly. (octaves dont matter) the name of this note is the key your instrument's in.
