Is Medical Assistant a good choice of medical career?

A good career choice for someone with fibromyalgia?

  • I have found myself unemployed recently and i am trying to find a good career choice for someone with fibro. for the previous ten years i have been a dental assistant which is a very demanding job. my discharge was due to being on maternity leave and being the only assistant and not because my fibro affects my job performance. however, it is difficult for me to perform my duties some days especially since the birth of my daughter seems to have made my fibro flare up worsen. does anyone have any good recommendations for a career choice that would be? i found it demanding because i was the only dental assistant for the last doctor i worked for and we where short staffed for one. Also, please keep in mind that everyone has different symptoms of fibro so yours isn't neccessarily like mine. Also, it is demanding because you have to hold one position usually an awkward one for long periods of time that put alot of strain on your neck and back. dental assisting is both physically and mentally more strenuous than the average person realizes. Finally yes i was properly diagnosed I went through ten years of hell with doctors before i was finally properly diagnosed and there is no other condition that fits plus my mother, 2 brothers and my son have it however it is possible that there is a small chance that I might be mistaken and have another condition altogether.

  • Answer:

Call centre or Admin role and if you check with your state or local Disability body they can arrange ergonomic chairs, screens, desks etc to help make it easier. If you are in Australia you can see Centrelink and be referred to a Disability Employment Provider who can negotiate all these things for you. I am sure there are similar bodies in your country.

i worked as a special ed teacher and EMT with fms.. if you find dental assisting to be demanding, it may be hard for you to find work...why was it demanding? was it standing? then there are a lot of jobs that are possible.. maybe pharmacy tech or bank teller non medical senior aide fyi--fms is highly over diagnosed--even after people have supposedly had all the tests--docs miss positive test results (happened to me with a few different conditions--i had to diagnose myself and bring it to the docs attention)...most people actually have something else----if you do have something else---you may be better able to treat it.. are you in the US, were you eligible for FMLA (maybe not in small office)? AS I SAID--MANY PEOPLE THAT WERE SUPPOSEDLY PROPERLY DIAGNOSED HAVE BEEN MISDIAGNOSED.. the fact that you are saying there is no other condition that fits shows your ignorance---they are many conditions that can fit into anyone's diagnosis of fms.. FMS is often spread through the ears--one person really has it--and others catch it by hearing about it.. i've read job descriptions of dental assistants--i've seen them work---and have not seen anything like you describe--such as having to maintain position for extended periods.. i had such severe pain--i had to warn the neighbors not to worry when i woke up screaming at night...i couldn't stand for more than a few minutes at a time...i constantly felt like I was suffocating because it hurt to breathe..both hands went numb when i developed carpal tunnel....i couldn't commute too far because sitting in a car was extremely painful...at one point I was looking into getting my steering wheel modified because it hurt too much to grip the steering wheel for more than 5 or 10 minutes.... in talking to others--i have found that the majority have been misdiagnosed and actually had something else...i personally know 3 people that were definately misdiagnosed...2 others i don't know well enough, but there are red flags that they are misdiagnosed.. i have had symptoms for over 30 years---met with 2 top respected researchers (one of whom did misdiagnose 2 of the people I know) and participated in a medical study--and am mentioned in a book....i was diagnosed about 12 years ago...but I still look into every other possibility that comes up.. i have had very simple diagnoses missed...OA of the foot, damage to the optic nerve, hypothyroidism (developed last year..it was definitely ok for the last 5-12 years...with a readings at the very bottom of the normal range)..and also post concussive syndrome--the doc told me i could drive when i couldn't even sit unaided or see straight.....

A secretary for a dental office? You have experience in the business already. It won't make as much income, but you can survive. ^ just an idea. Make sure you get medication for your condition and take it.
