What are my chances of getting into University of Pennsylvania?
-
I am currently a sophomore in high school and im really looking in to University of Pennsylvania. I will be visiting the school in August to tour the campus. I am in the highest level of choir at my school and I am a Varsity track runner. Last year, i placed 32nd in the nation at nationals. I have a 3.93 out of 5.0 gpa currently but i'm hoping to get it up to at least a 4.3. I plan to major in chemical engineering and Mathmatics with a minor in music. I participate in Key Club, National Honor Society, and French Club. I have not taken the sat or act yet but i have been studying alot for them. I am in all Honors classes including AP and IB. I will recieve the IB diploma upon graduation. I just need to know if I have a good chance at getting in. Thanks. If it matters I am an african american female.

Answer:
IF you can bring your GPA (I'm assuming that's weighted if it's out of 5.0) up to at least a 4.3, you would make yourself competitive with that regard. However, that's about it thus far. Your SAT/ACT is a toss-up, so you'll have to wait to see how that turns out, but target at least 2100 SAT / 31 ACT if not higher just to be average for applicants to UPenn. Your strongest non-academic parts are your ethnicity (diversity is a great thing), and your choir involvement, but it remains to be seen how you can differentiate yourself which is really the crux of the college application process. Your clubs are okay; I've definitely seen that combo of Key Club and NHS before and more. Rigor of curriculum is good, but not unexpected for UPenn. Make no mistake, you have a strong profile right now, incomplete as it is. However, UPenn has no problems getting smart kids who play sports and who do activities like choir. To be fair, you're not very unique right now in your application, which then begs the question of why take you over another smart kid who's done something unique or has some unique facet of their personality. At the end of the day, it's not the grades, the test scores, or the extracurricular activities that quite frankly we all know we all use to pad our resumes that get you into top schools. 90% of their applicants are very qualified in all those respects. It's what you can do that puts you in the top 10-15% that really makes you stand out from other people that makes the school think that you would be an interesting and unique addition to their community.

It is about 18% in general. It is higher for legacies, recruited athletes, and underrepresented minorities and lower for students not in these groups.
