How To Stop Dog's Itching?

How do i get my dog to stop itching?

  • i have a 1 year old black lab and he has been itching like crazy!!!!! i have him on natural balance venison formula, with water and olive oil (thats what the vet told me to do) also, i have him on 3 itching pills (there benedrill like), but they dont seem to be doing anything. is there a food that would help him with his dry skin?

  • Answer:

Apple Cider Vinegar (Bragg Brand)... about 2 tablespoons per day. I wet my dry food too sometimes & it will not hurt your dog... Fish oil would be better than olive- as it is good for heart, skin & coat... the itchies will stop in 2 or 3 days...

Your vet seems a bit misinformed, it is a bad idea to add water to dry food so you should reconsider. Maybe your dog has a food allergy/sensitivity. Try feeding a different brand or switching to a raw diet/grain free diet. Raw diets often do the trick for dogs with skin issues. You could also try giving him an oatmeal bath.

Is he itching from dry skin or is he itching from his food. Benedryl is only for allergies not for dry skin. If its the skin, check and make sure of the ingredients in the food. No corn. Maybe you could add fish oil to the food. My friend does that for her german shepherd.

If your dog is on BENADRYL type tablets, and THEY"RE are not working, your vet can give your dog a shot of cortisone. I think that I'd be looking for a new vet. My dogs get a fish oil capsule with their dinner.

I use gold bond xtra strength on my lab. usually apply directly to the hotspot. Give him or her a bath, see how long it is before he starts up again..if he doesnt start up until you put him out then its an obvious outside allergy issue. Check to see if you have Fleas in the yard. speaking of outside he may be allergic to something outside..oak, a certain weed in the yard, your grass.. certain bushes or flowers. if that doesn't work you need to take him or her to the vet and get some meds to prevent scratching and hot spots. tell them with a firm voice nothing is working. You need to eliminate the possibilities on your side first. If you find no cause then approach your vet with issue.
