Why won't my @media queries work?

How advertising/media contributes to body image dissatisfaction among-st teenager girls?

  • I am a post-graduate student doing media studies. I wish to choose this as my dissertation topic. My queries are: 1) In my introduction, what do i write in the "historical backdrop"? 2) Can this problem be investigated by surveying on a small scale of some 100+ school girls? Or is it too big a problem to investigate? 3) In later stage, for analyzing the data of my survey samples, will i have to analyse it on a psychological scale as well? If yes, how to do that? (I have no background in psychology!)....If no, how else can the results of this study be generalized. 4) Can u also suggest another topic which is near to this one if this doesn't work? P.S. I really need help from somebody who can guide me on this issue. Jokers would not be appreciated. Thank you!

  • Answer:

    1. Describe the topic, how women used to deal with it, and how they deal with it now, then the role of the media: how girls are pressurised etc.. 2. 20 percent sample size is ideal... if you cannot find enough samples then you can limit your study to a specific group. From a village/town you may need 100 persons but you need only 20 girls from your school. You can pick your sample based on any geographical/ethnic community. Then ur dissertation would be renamed to something like ‘the influence of advertising media on the teenage girls of (your school/ village/town etc.. )’ 3. Depends on your research problem, hypothesis and the questioner... first you need to have a clear idea on what you are after... 4. Well I would ask you to go for something else... the topic that you have chosen do not seems to have much relevance, it is more into development psychology, this won’t help you when you go hunt for a job. You always wondered about something in your field of work. list them out, then think and study about them then you will have a list of few good topics. And your supervisor would be the best one to guide you through this...

I think those girls are just foolish. You just want to be like somebody else but you don't think of others being like you,? I call it stupidness being unduly bothered by what they media want for their pocket and not for you.

1) In my introduction, what do i write in the "historical backdrop"? - the history of how women viewed body image. back in the day being large wasn't un attractive look at some old art! 2) Can this problem be investigated by surveying on a small scale of some 100+ school girls? Or is it too big a problem to investigate? realistically you will not be able to get a true read. But a sample of 100 girls or so is acceptable. but the key is get 10 girls from different schools to do this that will increase your sample size with area's try going city country different lifestyles to consider too. different area's as well. people in the city might have more of a todays apeal and could be lead by the media more so then those in the country doing their own thing. 3) In later stage, for analyzing the data of my survey samples, will i have to analyse it on a psychological scale as well? If yes, how to do that? (I have no background in psychology!)....If no, how else can the results of this study be generalized. wouldn't hurt to get with a psychology teacher to help you assest what you need to do here this is out of my field of knowledge as well! I would assume you would have to build the survey correctly to ensure you have the great results. if the survey is created with thought you might not need to get any outside help! 4) Can u also suggest another topic which is near to this one if this doesn't work? nope!
