How come some items cost only 99 cents on eBay?

I am very confused, but how is it possible to sell items for 99 cents on eBay. I mean wouldn't it cost more than 99 cents for just shipping. Plus i have also noticed that the items usually come from "China" which is like the other side of Earth compared to USA. It should have a very high shipping charge. Could someone comment on this please, Thanks.
