Is it possible to hike the South Kaibab trail to Cottonwood Campground in Grand Canyon in one day?

  • Is it possible for a group of hikers (~6) with a cumulative group hiking proficiency of average/slightly above average skill level to make it from the Mather campground to the Cottonwood campground along the South Kaibab trail in one day if we start early in the morning? We'd be staying the night at Cottonwood, NOT trying to make it there and back in the same day. We know all about high heat during the summer months in the inner gorge and everything.
