How or why does baking soda absorb odors?

Absorb refrigerator odors?

  • Aside from baking soda, what can be used to absorb refrigerator odors? I've heard of activated charcoal but I don't know where to buy it. How about a cookie tray with rock salt and crushed charcoal briquets? This is not a simple onion smell problem. There was considerable mold. I washed it twice with ammoniated soap. The smell persists.

  • Answer:

Coffee grounds work pretty well. But first I would try what I've used to clean dozens of nasty refrigerators to get them ready for resale. Take all the drawers and shelving out & wash those in the bathtub with water and detergent. Rinse well and lay out to dry. Now get a bucket of clear water, a box of baking soda & 2 dishcloths or a washcloths. Wet one cloth & squeeze the the excess out. Use the baking soda as a scouring powder and scrub every square inch of the fridge & freezer. Don't forget the insides of the doors and the door gaskets. Now rinse it out with a clean cloth and the water in your bucket. Don't worry about getting all the baking soda rinsed off. You'll get it the next time.

Coffee grounds are very effective at removing bad refrigerator odor. Simply place dry coffee grounds in a couple of shallow bowls, and place the bowls on different shelves in the refrigerator. Don’t expect bad odors to disappear immediately. Allow a few days for the coffee grounds to absorb bad smells. http://www.article-submit.net
