I can't decide between a PA or a doctor?
-
I always wanted to be a doctor. But once I started researching the at least 11 years of school, the non-stop studying, the way my life would be dedicated to my job, I started looking into a PA. I figured this would be better for me since I eventually want to have a family and a life outside of my career. I would also still have the same basic knowledge as an MD but wouldn't have to go through all of the schooling to do so. But as I'm getting closer to finishing up my Bachelor's degree (in Biology), it seems like I am questioning my decision to become a PA more and more each day. What do you guys think I should do?

Answer:
As a physician, I can say that it is an excellent choice to go to medical school. However, it is extremely expensive, VERY hard work, a very long process, mentally taxing, and it means putting your life on hold for several years. Remember, that after college, there is both medical school and residency, and potentially a fellowship. Now, that being said, it is an extremely rewarding thing to do. My field is very mentally stimulating, challenging, and often fun. We as physicians have huge responsibilities, tremendous respect, and we get to change our patients lives. Most of us experience great independence, even when working for others. Our incomes range from middle income range to great, an few of us are ever unemployed. Often times however, there is little vacation times. All-in-all, it is one of the best choices you can make, if you are willing to make a life-long commitment to serving humanity, and to life-long learning. You can still have a family, and a home, but it will sure have to wait a few years.

Most MDs have a life & family, just like PAs. If you're a person that wants to be the final authority or the person in charge, then go to med school. If you 'settle' for being a PA, you'll regret it later on. Happiness as a PA depends on the docs you work with. I love my job. I have a lot of independence & trust from the docs I work with. I enjoy learning, but I don't mind that the docs are a LOT more educated & experienced. Spend time with both a PA & a doc that you know respect. Pick their brains about how they made the decision they did. Good luck!
