Which cell phone is better?

Which metal can shield cell phone RF better, Aluminum or Steel/iron?

  • Thanks for all the responses. There is a cell phone tower nearby. We were planning to put up a roof with metal sheeting any way and the primary goal is not for shielding. But I thought I will make a decision based on the one which has better shielding properties, may be reflect/absorb some of that radiation. Options are Aluminum and galvanized steel. Aluminum is 3 times costlier and thinner than the GI sheets, but I would mind spending that money if it has significant shielding ability than iron. Are there any adverse effects using metal sheeting near the tower?

  • Answer:

A cell phone needs to be able to receive and transmit RF signals to function, so you don't want to shield it. If you are worried about the radiation from the phone, turn it off. My first thought was that you wanted to put the shield around a cell phone, but your reference to roofing indicates you want to shield an area from the RF from cell phones or perhaps from cell phone towers ? You should be more specific. A roof won't do much shielding as the RF energy can enter via walls and any openings in the roof. You need a complete box enclosure around the area, a Faraday shield, aka a shield room.

A denser material will shield you more. Unless you are living very very close to a cell tower I would not be concerned with the radiation. There are probably many appliances in your house that would be more harmful. Not sure if you are worried about avoiding the radiation or trying to get good service in your house. Thickness is definitely a factor. The thicker the material the more waves will more or less get stuck bouncing around inside of it. Shininess is not a real factor. The shininess you are seeing is in a different set of wave lengths than you are worried about. So basically look up the densities of your material first and then thickness. Plastic would block/absorb the least and led would block the most. Density times the thickness will give you a rough idea of how well it will keep out radiation. Good luck, T. (physics major)

To block cell phone UHF frequency, any metal can do. Make no difference between Al or Fe . Use whole piece of metal covers the roof and walls can block any this UHF frequencies. Thickness is not its factor.
