Knitting place-mats pattern help! (please only people who know how to knit)?
-
so long story short my grandma lost her pattern for place-mats, but she has the one for the dish cloth, which is the same pattern, but when the dish cloth is finished it comes out as a square, where a place-mat is rectangular. now since she couldn't find the pattern she told me its the same it comes out as a rectangle the more stitches you add on instead of a square (tried it, finished it.....now i have a large square place-mat, grrrr. also on a side note, i knew it wouldn't come out as a rectangle, but who's gonna argue with your grandmother and its better to try it at least....never know!) but the pattern is this(for the dish cloth): cast on 4 stitches, knit first row, second row you knit 2 then yarn over and knit until the end of the row. continue the same pattern as the second row for the next rows until you reach 53 stitches. once you have reached 53 stitches then you begin to decrease. first row (after reaching the 53 stitches to start decreasing) knit 1 then knit 2 together, then yarn over, then knit 2 together then knit to the end of the row. continue this until you have 4 stitches left, then bind off while knitting the whole thing, its knitted in a diamond shape, unlike some patterns that have you cast on the width and you just have to continue until you reach your desired length (in case the casting on only 4 stitches confused anybody) now my true question is, if this is the same pattern where and how would i make it into a rectangle.....or is there a place-mat pattern LIKE THIS ONE that grows as a rectangle instead of a square. if you know the pattern i'm referring to i would LOVE LOVE LOVE to know/ have it. and if nobody knows the pattern im talking about, well you might have just found a new one by my description:P i've gone onto multiple websites and have not found the one i am looking for, they all cast on the width and you stop at the desired length thanks!

Answer:
Your grandma is right. The extra step that makes a rectangle instead of a square is what's missing. When you get to 53 stitches, the next row is, as you said, k2, k2tog, yo, k2tog, k to the end of the row. But the row after that one is k2, yo, k to the end of the row. Then you alternate those 2 rows until your rectangle is as long as you want it to be. Next row: k2, k2tog, yo, k2tog, k to the end of the row. Repeat this row until you have 4 stitches left. Knit 1 row and cast off.

Decide the size rectangle you want to knit. Work as above until the sides are the measurement of the short side of the rectangle. Say it's your 53 stitches. Now shape as follows Row 1: Increase at beginning of row. Row 2: Decrease at beginning of row. You now have 53 sts again. Repeat rows 1 and 2 until the long side of the rectangle is the size required. You then decrease at the beginning of every row and complete as the square.
