Flying with a swollen inner ear?

Fluid behind your ear and flying?

  • Hello. I've been really congested in my head, and having small bouts of dizziness here and there for about a month. I also have some fluid behind my ears. Been going to a doctor trying to get rid of it and it hasn't helped much. But either way, I have a flight from RDU to Miami(2 hours) Friday and am really nervous. I've read that taking like Sudafed can help along with like chewing gum and yawning and such. But I've also read about these 'earplanes'. Do they work for people with fluid behind their ears as well as inner ear problems and such? Also, if you have any other suggestions to make this flight go better I'm listening. Thank you.

  • Answer:

Flying with any type of congestion or fluid in the ear might cause an ear block, an extremely painful condition that results from pressure differences in the cabin of an airliner during a flight. In the worst case, it can cause rupture of the eardrum. It's best not to fly until you clear up this problem. Earplanes will not help.

Well isn't this strange.. I had the same problem last year but the only problem is it has to go away on its own cause theres no medication to clear this up. i was so dizzy as well and i couldn't walk a strait line when i had it so im sorry to say your just gonna have to play it out and if i were you i would delay your flight until you start feeling better
